Hi all - After 66 days of almost flawless operation, I was unable to get a login screen on terminals.
gdm-binary zombied multiple times (once each time a terminal was started). Error lines in logs were as below: #################### /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1 AUDIT: Fri Jun 13 16:09:25 2003: 30085 X: client 6 rejected from local host ######## /var/log/messages Jun 13 16:09:23 saturn gconfd (root-4107): starting (version 1.2.1), pid 4107 user 'root' Jun 13 16:09:23 saturn gconfd (root-4107): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config source at position 0 Jun 13 16:09:23 saturn gconfd (root-4107): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/root/.gconf" to a writable config source at position 1 Jun 13 16:09:23 saturn gconfd (root-4107): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2 ################ I was able to log off and log on successfully on the server cponsole whilse this problem was still ongoing. I could not 'kill -9' the processes so ran 'init 1'. Not what I want to do..... Has anyone encountered this before or got any ideas? Any suggestions for a better way to recover from this sort of zombie problem than the old-style MS Windows (reboot - ouch!) mentality. As usual, thanks to all those who contribute to this project.
