spanning tree takes a long time to enable the port, after it gets link, up to 40 seconds. My guess is that the client gives up on dhcp before the switch enables the port. you should enable portfast on all ports that connect directly to clients or servers, and only keep normal mode on ports that interconnect spanning tree switches.
