Is this glitch in XFree or LTSP?

Greetings all. I've "emerged" the current LTSP package for Gentoo (it's "ltsp-core-3.0.7-r1") and my LTSP thin client starts up fine in runlevel 3 but not in runlevel 5, the GUI mode. The error message printed to the console is simply "Fatal server error: Cannot open log file '/var/log/XFree86.0.log'". Please help me figure out if the problem is related to my LTSP installation or to some X config setting.

The 36 steps described in JAM's "Chapter 1. Theory of operation" are executing although the transient files and directories created in /tmp as listed in step 29 are somewhat different - maybe the doc is a little outdated? Here is the list created in my client's /tmp with empty directories denoted by a trailing "(0)":

XF86Config

compiled (0)

hosts

hosts,equiv

lost+found (0)

mnt (0)

mtab (0)

resolv.conf

start_ws

syslog.conf

var/X11R6/xdb/compiled --> /tmp/compiled

var/lib/xdb (0)

var/lock/subsys (0)

var/log (0)

var/run (0)

# df -h shows that the ramdisk is being created:

rootfs  1.5G  248.1M  1.2G  17%  /

/dev/root  1.9M  1.8M  146K  93%  /oldroot

192.168.0.254:/opt/ltsp/i386  1.5G  248M  1.2G  17%  /

/dev/ram1  1003K  45K  958K  4%  /tmp

I've successfully run through all of the "Chapter 6. Troubleshooting" but the difficulty arises in section 6.5 - obviously the Xserver is not starting because I'm returned back to the bash prompt with the above-mentioned error message. Yet, the display manager is running:

# netstat -ap | grep xdmcp

udp        0      0 *:xdmcp                 *:*                                 1515/kdm

I've read previous postings complaining about the "Cannot open log file '/var/log/XFree86.0.log'" message but I haven't seen any resolution of it. Very mysterious. And frustrating!

 Thanks for any help.
