Your best bet is to cd to the source directory
for the package and try:

    # make uninstall

It will only work if the author created an "uninstall"
target in the makefile.

Otherwise, it's not a pretty picture.  You have to 
list the files installed in the distribution and
delete them one at a time.  This process is greatly
helped if the software was installed in a single
directory.

This is why package managers are so popular.
