There is another alternative for client boot with no moving parts.
A CompactFlash card has an interface identical to an IDE disk,
and there are adapters for IDE cable or direct plug into motherboard.

Several digital cameras (Canon, Nikon, others) are sold with a
"starter" CompactFlash card of 8MB or 16MB.  This is quite small
for photography (thus you may be able to get them second hand
for free), but plenty big for booting or even a small filesystem.
There is a limit to the number of times that any sector can be
[re-]written reliably, but typically it is thousands of times or more.
