Thanks for the thought! I believe I have figured out what is happening....
On our previous Mandrake 8.2/ltsp setup we had multiple (15) machines with 2mg video memory (old cards). For these, I used the XF86_SVGA driver. When I tried the same setup with Mandrake 9.1/ltsp, I got the flashing login screen. Just for fun, I tried a 4mg Matrox card and it worked!
Apparently, the older video cards do not have enough video memory to handle the newer KDE login. It does not appear to have anything to do with RAM memory.

It's woking well on my 9.1 box. Perhaps we can compare config files and work out why your's is not working.
Oh yea, I had 9.0 and just upgraded to 9.1. Perhaps why my install is working.
