Hello everybody
We are using LTSP with around 50 workstations, when we try to connect more ws we have the following error:
Jul 12 06:38:45 star-warrior dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.0.51 to 00:e0:7d:83:dc:a7 via eth0 Jul 12 06:39:27 star-warrior kernel: eth0: Too much work at interrupt, IntrStatus=0x0010. Jul 12 06:39:32 star-warrior kernel: eth0: Too much work at interrupt, IntrStatus=0x0040. Jul 12 06:39:42 star-warrior kernel: eth0: Too much work at interrupt, IntrStatus=0x0040.
Actually we discconect the last connected ws but the server (a SuSE 7.2 with 1.5 Memo) freeze and dont work again, the only solution its to reboot the system , breaking the service, we try to restar network, route, dhcp, but nothing work, only the system reboot.
Do you know wahts happening ???
Well, the error message says that there are too many interrupts. Interrupts are signals to the CPU from other components in the system saying "hey, could I have some of your time?", and with too many of them the system just gets overloaded. Often, LTSP systems generate a lot of network traffic, and combinations of network cards and drivers can be the bottleneck in the system - more than RAM and CPU speed (although CPU speed has an impact on the number of interrupts that can be handled).
It would seem that you have a situation where the network card and driver puts too much load on your machine.
You can see what is going on if you run some kind of monitoring software like MRTG og LRRD on the machine, or just open a terminal and run the command
vmstat 10
The result contains a lot of information. Look for
system in cs 119 0 ^^^
The number under "in" is the the interrupt count (119 in this case), but the number of interrupts that is "healthy" varies a lot. I've seen up to 20-30.000 on a reasonably quick box (dual athlon 2200), and that was OK. Others will handle less. You have to test a bit.
Its there a solution ??
Try changing the network card, or if possible the driver. Or buy a bigger box. Or divide up the number of clients on two boxes.
