What could I possibly be missing? IS it these gateway pc's? It seems that I
hava done everything possible to make this work....
Try the cards in some other very different PCs, and see if they work. I'll send you a card that is known working in my machines for you to test after LinuxWorld.
Look for a BIOS upgrade for the Gateway machines. I have often found that BIOS updaters fix a multitude of problems, and Etherboot is mapped in by the BIOS. What BIOS and version is this, anyway?
First thing to do, is to see if the card works in _any_ PC. I'm sure you have a few other machines around to test in.
Let us know about the BIOS. If you've never flashed one before, you're in for a treat :) You'll need a bootable DOS floppy (of course WINDOW$ 2000 can't do that any more, so you have to go old school). And only IBM seems to have bootable images (well, I guess they still have PC DOS, after all :). It is often worth the effort, however.
