>From the description of the problem, it similar to a situation I encountered with the rtl8139d. It turned out that the rtl8139 has an internal flag that enables the external boot rom. There is a utility on Realtek's web site that can be used to setup the rtl8139 chip. I had to put the nic in a windows machine, run their utility.(How humiliating!).
Now, both rtl8139c and rtl8139d cards both boot with the same rom. Apparently, since the majority of (windows) users don't boot from the net, the rom is disabled at the factory.
