No .config for me (no openmosix here), but two hints:
- Enable devfs in the kernel
- Disable devfs - automount (option visible only when devfs enabled)

That could help you.
One more thing: When using mknbi, don't forget you *NEED* the
parameters --append="root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc"
