I am just getting started with LTSP - and up to now, I am *very* impressed. I have set up the server, based on SuSE 8.1, on a 800MHz machine (just for now, for test purposes!). My first client set up was from a virtual environment in vmware (figuring this would be the easiest - and it was). Then I moved onto the bunch of old pcs I have available. In general, no problems *but* (here it comes at last):
Machine: Compaq Deskpro 4000 (166MHz) with onboard 10Mbps nic - netflex-3/P
this uses the tlan driver - so off I went to rom-o-matic. There it was, precisely the correct rom image (correct PCI vendor and device id). I downloaded the image, made the boot floppy, booted the pc.
Problem: the driver initialises the nic correctly, and according to the server log, the server receives a DHCPDISCOVER from the workstation, and responds with DHCPOFFER, with the correct IP from dhcpd.conf - but the workstation seems to have gone deaf - it's as if the act of sending the dhcp request has now blocked the nic.
I have tried several other tlan based rom images, with the same effect - and have tried both the new 5.2.0 rom images, and the older 5.0.11 images. BTW, this is not a problem of this particular pc, as I tried with others (same model). I also tried with an old 3c509 nic - and everything worked perfectly - so the problem definitely is with the rom image.
I'm stuck.
Anyone come across this? Any ideas for what to try next?
Please don't say 'well, put in a new cheap nic' - I am in Africa here - and adding new hardware to old machines is not an option. I would really like to get the hardware working 'as is' because we have a lot of these old pcs which can be put back into useful service.
Thanks,
Tony
