Brad, You do NOT need a sound card in the ltsp server, but you do need to install the ltsp sound package.
Go to http://www.ltsp.org/instructions-3.0.html. Up in the upper-right hand corner of that page is a bunch of links to packages for download. near the bottom of that list is a link for ltsp_sound-3.0.1. Go ahead and install that package.
