it sounds like you haven't user rpc in /etc/passwd?
on what distro are you on the server?

$ grep rpc /etc/passwd
rpc:x:32:32:Portmapper RPC user:/:/sbin/nologin

add a rpc user, and relaunch portmap and nfs server

strange? i dont know if strace is used by ltsp?
have a look in /etc/xinetd.d/ 
have you a strace service  launched by xinetd? if so disable it

grep strace  /etc/xinetd.d/*
