There was a posting a month or so ago about compressed X. (http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg15265.html)I talked to the guys of NoMachine (who make this NX compression software) yesterday on LinuxWorld. Their technology seems really interesting, though one probably needs some CPU on the client side for compression (nothing like a 486 probably). Besides, only the client is (binary re-)distributable, afaik the server is not "open" but needs a license. The guys talked about having a test version (30 or 90 days or so), and seemed to like the idea of seemless integration into LTSP client (of course, they want to sell software :-)
Does anyone have any info or ideas about that? I've banned my kids from playing runescape on the thin client because of the 30 Mbit bandwidth it sucks up.
I'd like to have a look into license stuff and documentation, but won't do before a week's time or so - first there is lots of info back from the Expo I have to verify, take a look at (just measured) 7 kg paper I brought back from there :-) and second Etherboot PCMCIA's going to come out soon :-)
It sure is possible (with local_apps probably, and their server code being licensed for long-term-use) and will be done sooner or later.
