I am using a gateway server to serve DHCP/LTSP images over several 100BaseT ethernet switches. Then, I use a server for serving X desktops that is even farther back behind a 10BaseT half-duplex hub (obviously very slow) and furthermore, I am serving Windows terminal services from the 100BaseT area back to the X desktop server and back out again to client workstations all over the mix of switches and hubs.
Amazingly, it works perfectly fine. Furthermore, I have included Cygwin on the Windows terminal server (Win2K Advanced Server) and use it to run X applications.. Testing this, I used Linux to get to Windows and then Windows to get to Linux and looped these about 5 times over before it bombed on me. It started getting noticeably slow after the third full loop. This is fun....I'm also using mostly CAT3 cables, most of which are run alongside a 110VAC power line. It's utterly amazing things work as well as they do. The only failures we've had over the last year have been a 24 port, 100BaseT switch that's roughly in the middle of all this. It locks up shooting out tons of garbage about once every other month. Exception--Early on, we had desktops periodically freeze when I was using Red Hat 8.0 (or 8.1? I forget) as the desktop server. Red Hat's hacked version of XFree86 periodically froze when using it on the console machine, but not on the other systems. The Ext3 filesystem also had corruption a couple of times after power failures...that took a long time to scan and repair. I've since switched to ReiserFS like all my other boxes and have never had a problem with ReiserFS (except for two hardware failures) over the last four years. The fschk.reiserfs also works much faster than the Ext3 version. I like Red Hat for their console tweaks and such.. And I respect them a lot for staying 100% true to Free Software principles....But I think they are way too politically biased against certain technologies such ReiserFS and KDE...and this hurts us, users.
