Hello everyone,
I am looking at using LTSP for small public libraries in order to extend their current level of technology. I've yet to attempt working with LTSP and diskless workstations. So, that being said, I'd like to experiment with some older machines. Before I begin, I'd like to ask some questions. I have a several pc's I can experiment with for a limited time. (Eventually, we will be giving them away to poor libraries that need an extra pc.) I have one pc with a 550 Mhz processor and 256 mb ram that could be used as the server, although I could add more memory as needed. The pc has a 10 gb hard drive. I can outfit with 3com nic. I also have 2 - 300 Mhz and one 266 Mhz machine for use as terminals with about 128 mb ram and can be used with 3com nic's or wireless Lucent/Orinoco cards. Here's my question: Will the 300 Mhz and 266 Mhz pc's work ok as a diskless workstation using LTSP? Or should I look for faster processors? I would like to prove a case that older pc's work fine using old equipment when setup as diskless workstations and LTSP on a Linux server. If anyone has an words of wisdom they would like to impart, regarding x86 pc's, memory memory spec's for a linux server running LTSP, processors, or anything else, I'd appreciate it. I'll post what I learn after I take off the lab coat. Thanks.
