has anyone tried burning etherboot onto a bootrom

Not only me - I think most of the regulars here did that.
There's generally few problems that you could run in, so I'll enumerate them - given your boot floppy worked perfectly.

a/ You need to burn the PROM
Only few NICs support to burn EEPROMS in situ, so for most chipsets,
you need a ROM burner. My one cost 30EUR iirc.

b/ You need to get 27C128 (16kB) or 27C256 (32kB), some cards will work
also with 27C512(64kB) or even larger chips.
When I tried to get these, most local electronic shops didn't have
any of them. I "refurbished" chips from broken 286, 386 mainboards
and from one laser printer (that carried about 20 of them).
I'm quite sure www.disklessworkstations.com could be of help here.

c/ You need to activate the ROM socket. Usually, you can do so with
the utility "DIAG" or "SETUP" or "RSET" on the disk you got along
   the network cards.

d/ In case your ROM is larger then the file to be burnt in (that's 16k
in most cases), some say to write it twice (or 4 times, respectively)
into the ROM. I did so and succeeded. Others advice to only write it
to the beginning of the ROM once, but depending on the NIC this
seems not to work (as with my old NE2000 clone cards).

This should describe the most common problems.
If you have any more questions, you will be welcome to ask on the etherboot-users list (look onto the sourceforge.net etherboot project pages) or here, or just try the #ltsp IRC-channel.
