The graphical login message is controlled by the [xkg]dm display manager.
One of them could surely be configurable to use the DISPLAY environment
variable in the Greeting message.
Regarding /proc memory - I always have a second 'shell' (Ctrl-Alt-F2)
to provide a shell login on the client. From here /proc reports all
the client details.
On LTSP 4.0 I do this by having
SCREEN_01 = shell
SCREEN_02 = startx
in my lts.conf.
On LTSP 3.0 I used to do this by having this in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/inittab :-
1:35:respawn:/bin/startsess tty1 /bin/bash --login
2:3:respawn:/bin/startsess tty2 /bin/bash --login
8:4:respawn:/bin/start_telnet
9:5:respawn:/tmp/start_ws
The addition of '5' in the tty1 line adds a shell in runlevel 5.
You are reminded that there are minimal tools available under the
thin client shell - 'cat' is a good one ..
Cheers, Andy!
