Tom,

Take a look at http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/modelines.html

Also, your XF86Config file isn't really empty.  it is a symlink that 
points into the /tmp directory when the workstation boots up.  During 
the boot process, it will fill that file with the configuration info 
that it needs to.
