Dear Friends, First of thanks to Jim for releasing LTSP4. It has really solved a lot many problems for me mainly with respect to local app.
I installed LTSP4 recently after compling the lbe. The main reason for switching over from LTSP3 to LTSP4 was the local application. LTSP3 had Netscape 4.77 browser which was giving me lot of problem. It used to crash whenever a user visited Flash website. My limitation was that I had to run browser as local application. This was the reason I switched over to LTSP4. Now I have Mozilla Firebird 0.7 running as local application on client PCs. Now with the latest browser I don't face problem of browser windows crashing. Although there is no major problem in the setup except that some display cards are giving some problem. My earlier setup had LTSP3 with nearly 30 client PCs and nearly 1000 users. There are variety of PCs including PII and PIII as clients with different types of NICs and display adapters. All the display cards were working fine with LTSP3. But with LTSP4 I had to make certain changes in lts.conf to make these display card to work. For example in earlier setup I had specified XSERVER=auto and all the display cards worked. Now with LTSP4 for some display cards I have to specify XSERVER parameter for these display cards. The modules I have to specify are i810, s3, s3virge etc. After specifying this these cards work. But I am facing problem in two specific types of cards namely Cirrus Logic GD5446 (used cirrus, cirrus-alpine, auto) and S3 Trio 32/64/64V+ (used s3, s3virge). Even after using the mentioned modules these cards did not work. Although these cards are detected by startx script. Upon booting the client, I get the message X server failed to open screen. Can anyone help me out with this. I wonder why these cards will not work with LTSP4 even though they worked with LTSP3. One more thing I noticed about local app was that it is supported with ssh. Although ssh provides security, but I had some problem in implementing ssh for all the users in my setup. To create key for all the users and copying them user's home directory's authorized key was bit of a work for me. So I switched back to rsh. I copied all the relevant rsh files from my main OS and copied them into ltsp tree and things are working like in LTSP3. Thanks a lot in advance for helping me out of the problem of display cards.
