I have had linux freeze only with hardware issues.  Mainly memory problems.  
Using cheap memory on a board with a ServerWorks chipset.  Try a memory test 
program.

download the .iso , stick on a disk and test the ram on the server.  If it 
freezes then memory is your problem.  This happened to us.  Now the server 
runs better with 30-40 clients better than our winXP Pro stations.
