I have gotten a 486sx/8meg to run on ltsp3 with a custom kernel. A 386/25 would be pushing it on the usefulness front as far as I am concerned. I paired down the kernel to alleviate the need for NFS Swap and it worked great. Well, as great as a 486sx 33 can be :)
I think I also did something to eliminate the pivot-root in that setup. Not sure why anymore. It all depends on what you want to run, but certainly 8mb isn't enough to run much, especially X. Try turning on NFS Swap in the lts.conf file, that should help alot.
