For 1024x768 @ 8 bit you will need a card with 1MB of RAM. They existed (I
used to own an Tseng Labs ET4000 with 1MB RAM)
They might be a bit hard to find with 1MB and VESA support, as most ISA
cards came with 512KB RAM (That will do 800x600 @ 8 bit).
It sounds like you only have a standard VGA card with 256KB of RAM in the
system.

Have you tried computer scrapyards ?? They usually have older stuff like
that.
