Lawrence, It sounds like the video card is over-driving the monitor, causing the monitor to go into a shutdown mode to save itself from burning up.
Take a look at http://www.ltsp.org/contrib/modelines.html for some examples of different modelines you can specify, and see if that clears up the problem.
