If you boot the workstation into text mode and have it ssh to the
server, you can run X via ssh.  XDMCP (and therefore UDP) are only used
during the initial handshaking for the login prompt.

However, with 300MHz CPUs you made find that this is too slow to use. 
I've found that upgrading a network to 100mbit is well worth the money
when running LTSP.
