These Compaqs aren't too bad. I have four of them. Forget about that bios stuff on the separate partition. I went down that road and it turned out to be a big, fat waste of time.
I decided to go with the existing tlan NIC and the integrated Cirrus video adapter. There's a couple of tricks to getting it all working. For the NIC I had to pass some boot params via the dhcpd.conf file to force the NIC into half-duplex. For the vid adapter use X-3.3.6. AFAIK, X-4x doesn't work. I've tried... let me know if you get it working.
Most people avoid using Compaqs but you're right, they're are really cheap! Gotta go to bed. Email me if you need more info.
