If he is just trying to get a dedicated *nix* applicance running then he
doesn't need 70Mb of software, he could cut the contents of ~/ltsp/i386
down significantly. There are distros that fit on a floppy. But at
100Mbit switched, 70Mbyte could still happen in less than 10 secs.

Yeah but no reason he can't download and run this locally, we don't know
that his "telco-grade" applicance requires a graphics interface.

As I understand it, he wants to network boot a machine and once it's
running it can  "stand-alone". I.E if the server goes down there's no
reason this "applicance" has to die.

Probably not what LTSP was designed for but as I said just my $0.02 worth
