Mark,

Sounds like the wrong Xserver for that video card.  I've seen this 
happen before.

Any chance you are using an s3 based video card ?

If so, try setting XSERVER = XF86_S3
or XSERVER = XF86_S3V
and see if that clears it up.

If not, let us know.
