| This configuration works perfectly on a non-usb mouse.  On a USB mouse,
| the mouse wheel is not recognized. I'm pretty convinced I have a problem
| with the usb modules I'm loading, although I'm not sure what that problem

What make of mouse are you useing.. I use Microsoft and Logitech mice, bith work just fine with the IMPS/2 driver.. on /dev/input/mice with the Zaxis Mapping option stated before.. It may be that your mouse type neds a particular flavour of hammer applied...
