LTSP doesn't care what kernel is running on the server. It doesn't really even have to be Linux.
Keep in mind that whatever is running on the server, the kernel that is running on the LTSP workstation will still be a 2.4 kernel. That is, unless you build your own custom 2.6 kernel for the LTSP workstation.
