Giving up seldom is an option :-)
My bet would be the machine has too few RAM (try upgrading one, just
for finding out) or the video card is not supported and you tried a
lpp-kernel (with the graphical linux progress patch).
I'd suggest you try an older/newer linux kernel once, that does cost
you nearly nothing. I saw this once that an older kernel helped.
