Very good; thanks! I recommend using a recent CVS snapshot or our
0.7 prerelease tarball:

        http://libvncserver.sourceforge.net/LibVNCServer-0.7pre.tar.gz

We've fixed a lot of bugs since 0.6 and I've added a couple x11vnc
performance improvements (along with the inescapable feature creep).
I will try to convince the other libvncserver developers to do the 0.7
file release in May sometime, but any changes to x11vnc will be small.

That sounds like a very good infrastructure. Once the XAUTHORITY data
is available in a standard place, it is a simple matter to write a wrapper
script to refer x11vnc to it.

A couple misc. notes:

If one wants to encrypt the VNC traffic with ssh it would go something
like this:

# ssh -L 5900:localhost:5900 someclient \
  'XAUTHORITY=/tmp/... /usr/local/bin/x11vnc -display :0 -localhost -bg'

(/tmp/... means your known location. The above ignores userid issues,
but I hope gives the general idea.)

# vncviewer -encodings "tight hextile zlib" localhost:0

It turns out I have a couple krups javastations here at home that I use
as Xterminals. I'm currently playing around with a server-centric scheme
for the XAUTHORITY data. I basically just add a line like:

cat $XAUTHORITY > /var/tmp/xdmcookies/$DISPLAY

to /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup (I use xdm on my Xterminals). Then an x11vnc
wrapper script can get the auth data in this central location based
simply on the desired client $DISPLAY.

I prefer your startx-like local cookie scheme for LTSP, but I mention
the above as another way to try to attack the X authority problem.

OK. I'm most interested in on how LTSP would be using the remote viewing
feature. I must admit I lazily admin the machine displays on my home
LAN using x11vnc so I don't have to leave my seat (and occasionally spy
on my daughters' X11 sessions, scary... :-)

Best,

Karl
