Hi,

just about looking for some ideas to make the admin's life easier :-)

I'm setting up an LTSP server for students' computers. That means, about 100 accounts on 24 terminals. There are mainly 2 printers one of which must be chosen via a script on login for the client machine. When the user logs in near printer 1, this one is chosen and vice versa. Plans are to spread the network over the house, so there are more rooms and printers for specific terminals to follow.

The script sets $PRINTER to the printer which is next to the terminal.

Now I found that it's Mozilla and OOo who call kprinter before printing, saying "kprinter --stdin". It's a piece of cake to change this to somewhat including "-P $PRINTER" for ONE account - but for 100???

To make it easier, it would be nice to find some way to either

- set kprinter to always look for $PRINTER for all users, but how? Or

- set the conf or rc or whatever files for Mozilla and OOo in the /etc/skel so every new user will inherit the "-P $PRINTER" when created, but where are these files for Mozilla and OOo? Or

- avoiding to use kprinter, just using the printer dialog every application brings anyway and forcing the thing to use $PRINTER, maybe by not using CUPS but somewhat else, but how and what? Or

- any other way that spares me having to look up every single application for every new user account to adjust it.

So, how did you cope with this problem on your network?

Thanks for reading up to here - and for every idea!

Rolf
