Martin, The only way I could see this happening is if all of your servers are on the same network, and more than one of them is serving dhcp.
The thin client will make 2 dhcp queries. One from the bootrom (etherboot or pxe). and then the 2nd query will be from the initrd. It could be that one server is answering the 1st query, and a different server is answering the 2nd query. As for your problems with X, more information, like type of video card would be helpful. Still, you need to get your dhcp issues resolved before you spend any time on the X issue.
