David, If you are using PXE, then you don't need to tag the kernel. You just need a 2nd stage bootloader, like pxelinux.0.
If you are using fairly recent LTSP kernels, (last 12 months), then everything you need is included in the kernel package. take a look at http://www.ltsp.org/README.pxe for more info.
