Jim, You want unbiased testimonials?? I can't give you that exactly. I'm a firm believer that if the world would dump their MS crap in the river, it would be a better and safer Internet! :-)
That said, I've had some real success with LTSP. We have 15 branch locations in 3 states. Each branch is comprised of a server and anywhere from 3 to 15 thin-clients, depending on the size of the branch. Each server has OpenOffice, Mozilla, ghfaxviewer, Acrobat Reader, etc., with plug ins installed in the browser for java and flash. We use Gnome on the desktop and the Evolution email client and mostly the system just works. The biggest issue I've had is initially we were using recycled PC's with old 3Com Nics loaded with a Boot-ROM. We had a fair amount of service-calls relating to these older units. I started purchasing PXE bootable PC's from I-Dot PC this past year and replacing units as they go belly-up. This PC (Web station) has no hard drive, comes with a CD (although you can specify the units come minus for a savings of $25 to $30). I've been buying cheaper 15" Viewsonic monitors, which have worked well for my needs. On top of the branches listed above, We recently deployed an Internet community center with 10 LTSP Diskless Workstations, 17" Industrial NEC Monitors. Hope this is what you were looking for. Thanks, Steven G.
