For the most part, USB floppy drives work well. The only 'problem' I have is that they are super slow when used in MS Office (under Crossover Office). I doubt there is much I can do about it, except warn users that saving to them is slow.
I haven't had as much luck with USB Zip drives and USB flash drives (thumb drives, pen drives, etc.). Actually, they work fine if used 'correctly'. But, if a user attempts to do a directory listing when the devices are in the non-ready state, then it becomes necessary to reboot before.
For example, I insert the flash drive. I do an ls (or browse to the locating using your favorite file manager) and see the contents of the drive. I remove the flash drive. I do another ls and see nothing (as expected). I re-insert the flash drive and do ls again, but I see nothing again (not expected). On the contrary: I insert the flash drive. I do an ls and see the contents. I remove the flash drive and insert another flash drive. I do an ls and see the contents of the new flash drive. (Note that there was no attempt to access the drive while it was not inserted in this case).
The same goes for the Zip drives. Any attempt to access the drive while it is in the 'not ready' state (this includes approximately 5 seconds after you insert a disk while the LED is flashing) will cause any future valid accesses to not work.
This may be an issue with supermount, as I can mount/unmount the device (with supermount unloaded) with no problems.
With all that said, does anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this?
