I've done exactly what you are trying to do. I haven't documented it well, however due to lack of time. I used IceWM, which is easy to lock-down and kdm as the login manager (easy to configure for auto-login). You can modify the browser as well and take out things you don't want. I just updated our kiosks to LTSP 4.1 and Firefox 0.9.3 and I'd be happy to share the code, configurations, etc.
