John, It looks like you have installed LTSP-4.0. but LTSP-4.1 is the current version. Take a look at http://www.ltsp.org/ltsp-4.1.html for more info.
But, that doesn't explain why you are having troubles. Lots of people have installed LTSP-4.0 without problem. My first suggestion is to install ltsp-4.1. If you don't want to go that route, then you'll need to supply us with some additional info. Your dhcpd.conf file would be good to look at, and your /etc/exports file.
