One thing I might have forgotten is that it does not seem to matter how many clients are connected at the moment: once there was only one client connected and it locked nevertherless. However, when there is NO clients connected (weekends) the server does just fine, never locking.
If I had to take a guess - the issue may be network or cranky client NIC related. I have seen stuff like this happening with bad server nic before.
