It is all excellent! (Not that I tried it yet, but it is just what I was 
looking for).

Seems nautilus like to hang like mad anyway on my system anyway, so USB might 
not be it.

I'm interested in investing some time in this, however I will have to think 
about how to actually do it (I guess either parsing the kernel log (a bit 
crude...), or find the magic strings in /proc somewhere). As I guess the 
symlinking must happen on USB insertion, that is.

If/when that is in place then it should be possible to use that for mounting 
too, so that mount happens on insertion and one can get rid of automount all 
together (if "sync" as a mount option is enough to avoid having to unmount 
before plugging the USB out, that is).
