I use SuSe 9.1 with KDE3.2.1(from install disk and yast updates) I
have esound installed but not turned on on the server.

lts.conf shows
        SOUND              = Y
        SOUND_DAEMON = esd # This can be 'nasd', or 'esd' at this time

As the user on the workstation
Control Center
     Sound & Multimedia
          Sound System
               Hardware tab on right side
                    Select audio device drop down
                          Enlightened Sound Daemon

I also set use custom rate to 44100 Hz -- I don't remember if that
was needed or not.

On the general tab, I do not have enable network sound checked.

It took a while to find all that, but in the end there wasn't that much to set.

If you need nasd, you will have to install it (suse doesn't provide an
rpm if I remember right) then recompile artsd and it will show up in
the drop down. esound has worked better for me so far.

Hope that helps.
