Halli, hallo, hi,
I'm asking here in this mailinglist because this is (in my opinion) the best mailinglist about thin-clients. My question is a little bit offtopic, because it isn't a question about LTSP.
Someone tells us, that if you use a thin-client you will need at least 512 MB of memory, because the X-Server needs this. My opinion is, that this is too much. You don't need so much memory.
You are right. We routinely operate clients down to 16 MB of RAM, albeit with NFS swap enabled. 64 or 128 MB clients need no help at all from NFS swap.
512 MB RAM is way above the needed memory for a thin client.
The thin-clients will work only with a X-Server which is connected with a terminalserver. Perhaps in the future there will be a NX-client (NoMachine) which will make the connection to the terminalserver (then over a WAN).
NX will reduce bandwidth requirements, but will increase the need for better hardware on the clients. I would assume that RAM is part of that, but I have no real life experience with NX with LTSP.
Any other opinions? And why?
Greets Gonzo
