Actually, both are valid.

If the value starts with 'XF86_', then it will use XFreee86 version
3.3.6.

Otherwise, it will use a X.org 6.7 module.

With the older XFree86, they had completely separate Xservers, that were
complete executable binaries. Each Xserver had support for some
specific video cards. The exception was the XF86_SVGA, which had
support for lots of cards.

Then, when XFree86 came out with version 4.0, they went to a modular
Xserver, where you load one binary, and that binary would load a
"module" that would drive the video card. For example, 'ati' is a
module for XFree86 4.0 and newer.

When the XFree86 core team pretty much dissintegrated due to some
internal issues, X.org came along and picked up the ball and are now
running with it. They started with the XFree86 codebase as of
XFree86 4.3.99-902 I believe. That was the same thing as the X.org
X11R6.7 release that came out back in June. Since then, the X.org
foundation has made a 2nd release, and we're working on integrating that
into LTSP.

For a list of valid 3.3.6 Xservers, take a look in
/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/X11R6/bin. Anything that starts with XF86_ is
a valid 3.3.6 Xserver.

For a list of valid X.org modules, take a look in
/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers. Anything that ends with
"_drv.o" is a valid X.org module.

The only doc that I know of that tells which Xserver to use for any
particular card is this:

   http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/Status.html

If someone knows of a better source of info, i'd like to hear about it.

Hope that helps,

Jim McQuillan
