Subject: Suse 9.1 and 9.2

Hi, I am trying to run LTSP with Suse 9.1 and Suse 9.2 but they seem to be fairly slow. With just one client !! Does any of you have any ideas on how to speed it up? Or is anyone else using Suse 9.1 on a machine where its running quick if so what machine are you using.?

I've got similar issues to look into, but haven't had time yet.

Over here, we moved from a PIII 667MHz/512MB "server" with K12LTSP 3.x to a 2xPIII 800MHz/1.5GB machine with SUSE 9.1 + LTSP 4.1. Currently 12 simultaneous workstations, previously 10.

Curiously, it seems OpenOffice runs (reportedly a lot) more slowly now.

Culprits I'll go looking for:
- Is OOo properly installed with a network installation (now it's the vanilla SUSE setup)?
- People now run KDE 3.x, does it eat more memory/resources compared to the old Gnome (it's notable that Kword doesn't seem sluggish)?
- Check any odd memory/CPU usage.
- I had some problems with dhcpd setup and YaST, so dhcpd.conf, corresponding sysconfig and init.d stuff will have to be reviewed
- The basics: hows the network doing? One speed/booting culprit I removed this Tuesday was a slightly faulty TP cable...

One difficulty will be to catch the load/performance problem in the wild... A load simulator wouldn't be a bad thing.

What's your setup?

BR,
Gudmund
