Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp_sane-1.0.4 and the Epson RX600 usb scanner

I've just had much amusement trying to get the scanner on my Epson RX600
usb printer/scanner/copier working with the ltsp_sane-1.0.4 package (see
http://www.dipe.de/~pe/ltsp_sane/). Despite following Peter's excellent
README, /dev/usb/scanner0 failed to appear on my workstation.

For anyone with a similar problem, here are some tips:

Get a bash session going on the workstation:
bash-2.05b#
Switch the scanner on and off. You should see USB disconnect and USB
connect messages on the console, which will give you the vendor and
product ids - e.g. 0x04b8 and 0x0806.

Try removing modprobe, then forcing it to use these ids:
bash-2.05b# modprobe -rv scanner
bash-2.05b# modprobe -v scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x0806
If this works, you should now have the famous /dev/usb/scanner0 on your
workstation.
The next stage is to see if sane recognises it:
bash-2.05b# sane-find-scanner
You should get a "found USB scanner" message, and you can go on to use
scanimage to detect the scanner:
bash-2.05b# scanimage -L
You should get a message telling you the type of the scanner.
Finally, you can exercise the scanner with
bash-2.05b# scanimage -T

To make this modprobe setting permanent, you need to add a line to your
LTSP modules.conf (e.g. /opt/ltsp-4.1/i386/etc/modules.conf):
options scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x0806

This edit will produce error messages about modules.conf being newer
than modules.dep, which you can ignore, or else fix by hacking the
timestamp on modules.dep to a suitable date, e.g.:
sudo touch -t200412311746 /opt/ltsp-4.1/i386/etc/modules.conf

If all this works on the workstation to which the device is physically
attached, then the rest of Peter's README should get you working from LTSP.

A couple of final points specific to the RX600:

To aid debugging, you can set increasing amounts of debugging
(1=minimal, 128=lots) with e.g.:
$ SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=128 scanimage -L

I had little success using the version 1.0.14 of libsane supplied in
ltsp_sane-1.0.4. I've copied the 1.0.15 binaries into the /opt/ltsp tree
(how about a new version of ltsp_sane Peter?) and now it gets a bit
further, but I'm still seeing "usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout" messages
which seem to cause the various front ends I've tried to hang sooner or
later.

However, I think these are faults with sane and/or the hardware rather
than anything to do with LTSP...

Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] XDMCP

Dears,
My videocard is not probed.
Of course,i couldn't configure XDMCP.
When i wanna configure it through ltspcfg,But i
receive following messages:
/////////////////////////////////////////////////
Xdmcp is the protocol used by a display manager to
present
a login dialog box on the workstation.

Do you want to enable (y/n) ? y

Normally, when a display manager is running, it will
launch an X server on
the console screen, giving you a graphical login on
the console as well as
on the workstations. Some people prefer to keep their
server in character
mode.

Do you want to disable the graphical login on the
server (y/n) [N]?
Can't call method "configure" without a package or
object reference at /usr/sbin/ltspcfg line 2426.

Even i have installed Perl modules.Because my distro
is Slackware 10.
But ltspcfg doesn't work.
Please help me.............

it seems I at last managed to find *something* on it myself:

http://www.portx.qc.ca/ve2bse/utils/etherboot2/vendortags.html

For anyone else looking to learn more about this, the options 128 and
129 seem to refer to tags/vendor tags in bootp/etherboot. Just starting
to scratch the surface...

Further authoritative pointers are welcome.

Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] MaxSession issue

--NextPart_Webmail_9m3u9jl4l_9666_1104853782_0
Content-Type: text/plain
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

Over the holidays I moved from LTSP 3 to LTSP 4.1. Now, I am getting alot of
MaxSession error messages. Prior to the upgrade, I never got any of these
messages during year. Today, 30+ terminals went down with this message which
is causing an issue for the technology teacher. Also affected the assistant
principal who had his login terminated with the same error. I had previously
increased Maxsessions to 500, and now have it set at 1000. The LTSP server is
running RH 9.0.

ps eax | grep gdm shows 110 gdm sessions running.

If it means anything, the screen no longer just blanks after 10 minutes, but
returns to the text screen that shows that the Xserver is being invoked (which
is a change that the teachers have noticed and it confuses them since they
think the system has crashed and then attempt to reboot their systems). When a
system first boots and gets this error, I have to let it sit for 5-10 minutes
before retrying or else I will continuously get the Maxsession error. Perhaps
all of the above are related and there is a simple fix, but I am not seeing it.
Any help is greatly appreciated since I am lost. I am not at the school but
can walk the tech teacher through the process via phone if a resolution is
available.

I am desperate for a solution since the reason for the upgrade was to help get
local disks and other features, but now I seem to have lost system stability.

Sincerely,
Dave Hopkins

Dave,

Check your gdm.conf file for the 'Max sessions' setting. Crank it way
up and restart gdm.

Also, there was a bug in GDM, that was fixed about 18 months ago. Any
recent distros should have the fix. The problem was, if you turned off
your terminal, the session wouldn't die.

Yep! I think if you're using RH9 without upgrade the problem is GDM
version. I had this problem in a Debian system and was solved in last
"apt-get dist-upgrade" :o) What's your GDM version?

I recently changed my LTSP server from Fedora Core 2 to Ubuntu (Debian)
and had to fiddle around with gdm for ages to get it stable - that's gdm
2.6.0.3-1ubuntu20

Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] k12ltsp pop3 authentication or openldap

I am wanting to install k12ltsp on our campus. We already have a linux
box running with accounts for all the student on campus. My question
is; can i set up ltsp to authenticate to this server? What is the best
method for doing this? Can ltsp authenticate to another server via pop3
, openldap, or pam?

Also can i set up one user that all the termials will use so i don't
have to make several users...one user for the library terminals and one
user for lab computers?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions.
