Change xmms to using the arts output, or launch it using the artsdsp
wrapper, like this: "artsdsp xmms"

The arts project is officially abandoned BTW.

Linux thin client sound is a very underdeveloped area, and there is no
perfect solution. But if your demands are only KDE system sounds and
xmms then it should work out fine.
