This is a bit unintuitive, but it is the only advice I have, and I guess
it is better than nothing.

First you must find out if the soundcard drivers are doing their job.
Get and install "bplay" on the server and copy bplay and brec
executables to /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/bin (run "ldd" on them as well to see
if they require any libraries, and copy them if so).

Then boot the thin-client into shell mode, and use brec to capture audio
and bplay to play it out again (to the /tmp directory, or mount a new
NFS dir read-write if that doesn't have enough space for a few seconds).
This is all happening on the thin-client, and so you can figure out if
it is the ESD link or the soundcard drivers.

If it is the drivers then I would suggest compiling ALSA for the kernel
(I actually have the modules for the latest kernel lying around which I
can mail you). If it is the link then try using Arts+NAS instead of ESD,
or the commercial MuNAS.
