I thought I might be able to solve this with a quick and dirty hack - by tweaking all the references to a different tg3 controller (eg the 14e4:1644) to this one inside initrd (in /etc/niclist, /lib/modules/2.4.26-ltsp-2/modules.pcimap and /lib/modules/2.4.26-ltsp-2/kernel/drivers/net/tg3.o) but sadly this doesn't work as the tg3.o driver code contains various fixups for hardware bugs in the different versions of the controller and doesn't know what to do with this one.
