A quick reminder of my problem - I'm trying to build an initrd with a tg3 nic
driver which knows about the 14e4:1677 version of the controller built into a
Dell Optiplex GX280.
After lots of helpful advice I seem to have finally got everything to build.
I've built the system using ltsp 4.1.0 from cvs.
To get a suitable tg3 driver, I edited the linux-2.4.26.tar.bz package (and
the relevant md5sum) and replaced the following files with their equivalents
from the linux-2.4.29 source (note that the drivers in the 2.4.29 source are
aware of the 14e4:1677 version of the tg3 NIC):
tg3.c
tg3.h
pci_ids.h
After running build_all, I then further edited the initrd produced and
changed /etc/niclist so that it mapped 14e4:1677 onto the tg3 driver.
Then I replaced the initrd in the appropriate subdirectory of tftpboot with
the new one.
Now when I try to boot the optiplex, I get the following messages running up
to a kernel panic:
Mounting /proc
linuxrc: Installing tg3 driver
modprobe tg3
Kernel requires old modprobe, but couldn't run modprobe.old: No such file or
directory
ERROR! Failed to install the NIC driver module!
This could be caused by the wrong module for your particular
network interface card. Double check the 'option-129' entry
in your /etc/dhcpd.conf file.
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!
Is it likely that this error (the requirement for modprobe.old) is caused by
me using the tg3 driver code from a newer kernel? If not, has anyone got any
suggestions which might get me up and running with the Dell Optiplex GX280?
Thanks.
